PRESS RELEASECOMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION RENAMEDJanuary 18, 2001 - Washington, DCThe association formerly named ICTA will now be known as the Independent Multi-Family Communications Council (IMCC). It will continue to include providers and users of broadband products and services working together for the benefit of Multiple Dwelling Unit residents. IMCC's board of directors reflects its membership and includes 12 Private Cable Operators (PCOs), 12 Multi-Family Dwelling Unit (MDU) companies and 7 manufacturers and vendors. PCOs, MDU owners and broadband product manufacturers/vendors work together to provide quality video, DBS and high speed Internet to apartment, condo, HOA, campus and hotel/motel residents. The association focuses on public policy in Congress, the FCC and state legislatures. It also facilitates education, networking and improved industry business practices. The Charleston Financial Conference in March 2001 and The Program of Excellence are specific examples. "We are in the midst of a very difficult period. Virtually every company providing video, data and telecommunications is facing numerous challenges. The money markets are dry, new commitments are on hold and margins are thin," stated Bryan Rader, CEO of Media Works in Atlanta, Georgia. "Regardless, our industry association is charging ahead and is dedicated to improved products and services for multi-family community residents. Our purposes and goals remain the same but our face will change with a new Board of Directors, name, logo and mission statement. Many of our members will make it through this rough spot and come out even stronger, so will our association," he went on. Scott Wiggins of United Dominion Reality stated that, "MDU owners want an alternative to franchised cable, PCOs offer that. IMCC must facilitate an improved climate for growth. We confront barriers to competition that the FCC should address. States have mandatory access laws that should be repealed. Our Program of Excellence can improve the business practices of PCOs and MDUs for the benefit of residents. We also must find new financing. There's a lot to be done by IMCC members." "IMCC is entering a new stage in its evolution as an association. We continue our goals of achieving competitive communications and providing better choices for our resident families. Our joint efforts seek to keep residents pleased which produces higher occupancy rates," said Jim Sweeney of Equity Residential Properties Trust. "We all know the numerous MDU markets are a great opportunity for alternative analog and digital video and Internet providers. The MDU owners want us to provide quality products and services. Those companies that get through this difficult period will be tested, lean and stronger. Our BOD is dedicated to mutual success because working together is the foundation of the Independent Multi-Family Communications Council," expressed Cary Ferchill, CEO of WSNET.
